A bit overly sentimental
But still a good story nonetheless. It is a marked change from today's Hollywood war output of leftist-handwringing-angst ridden BS (and just as dishonest).

shareThis movie was considered overly sentimental even back when it was released in 1943 so that should tell you something.
If you watch this movie objectively then yes, it can be a bit too much. I watch it with a nostalgic eye for Saroyan's ideal version of the America homefront and I enjoy it for what it is.
This movie bored me silly. and should have been edited down to under 90 minutes.
There's a 1952 movie called 'The Member Of The Wedding' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044896/ which is a wonderfully written and acted drama. Even though nothing happens, it manages to grab the viewers attention, unlike this lead weight of a film.
BTW, where's the comedy in THC?
It's a beautifully filmed movie with mainly wholesome characters that could only have existed through the eyes of a child and was probably useful as a piece of propaganda.
shareIf you think the movie is sentimental, you should read the book. Not only sentimental, but an almost non-stop lecture on socialism. Speech after speech after speech.
shareThe sentimentalism and preachiness were probably the only flaws in this great movie.
