Which scenes were filmed and then deleted?

I have seen on Ebay a photo of the cast in a church scene. The book does contain a chapter where the Macauley family does attend church.However, was it filmed and deleted?

I also saw a photo with Mickey Rooney, Marsha Hunt (even though I don't think it is her in the photo), and a soldier (but it's not John Craven) who is sitting. That scene is not in the final film either.

Plus, I saw another Ebay photo of the holdup scene in the telegram office. I have to check the movie, but was this scene filmed and cut?

I know the length of the original script was Mayer's big problem, so I know Saroyan did not write the final script.

If anyone out there knows this, I would love to hear from them!

I just watched this on TCM and I kept waiting for a scene with "gang members" as listed in the credits on its page, but never saw any.

The church photo you mention might have been at the wedding scene.

The gang members are the boys who steal the apricot from Mr. Henderson's yard. The gang leader is played by "Alfafa," the Our Gang crooner with the cowlick.

As for the church scene, it shows Thomas Spangler and Diana Steed sitting in a pew (not in wedding clothes) with many of the residents of Ithaca also attending, so no it is not the same scene.

HAH! I did catch that the apricot thief was "Alfafa" but I guess my definition of "gang member" is a little different! Ah, the halcyon days of yesteryear!

and, yeah, I guess it's not the same scene. Don't know where it would have come in.
Alas, we may never know!

There is a big scene where Spangler and his now wife, played by Marsha Hunt, ride thru a picnic ground where every ethnic group in town is celebrating their own heritage. Spangler calls it the Valley Festival. It follows a montage of various images, the last of which portray "Easter Sunday, a lot of Sundays..." Maybe there was a scene filmed with the two of them in church just before this sequence, that wasn't used.

"It costs extra to carve 'Schmuck' on a tombstone, but you would definitely be worth it."
