Book v Movie?

Hi Guys,

I have read the book, For Whom the Bell Tolls, but have only watched a bit of this movie because the tape was acting up.

Does anyone know if it is basically the same as the novel? If it is different, how is it so. I enjoyed the novel very much!

Please let me your views on the movie

Thanks!!

Of all the films I've seen based on a novel, this one comes much closer than most in following the main plot lines of the book. Of course, some of the book had to be jettisoned, else they would have had a 5 hour film. Still, most of what I loved about the book (one of my favorites) is still there in the film. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Cheers!

I agree twm! I saw the movie first (the shorter version) and then read the book and I was amazed at how close the movie and book were together. Of course since then I have seen the longer version on TCM and am still amazed at how close it resembled the book. Something that is rare sometimes in Hollywood.

Greetings! Just curious--and what did you think of the "longer version" of the film vis-a-vis the shorter?

Sorry to answer so late but while both were excellent I liked the longer version better.

I think it was one of the better Hemingway adaptations for the screen.

The same as the book in visual terms. Exactly like i imagined. But doesnt give that powerfull feel as the book.

Hemingway wrote the book with Ingrid Bergman in mind.

I also heard He wrote Robert Jordan with Gary Cooper in mind and he would only sell the film rights to Paramount if they cast Coop.
