Early in the film, when Germain has examined Denise, and he is about to leave the room, Denise says in a loathsome voice, "Joseph", Germain then turns around and answers "No. My name is Remy"
I found this scene a bit odd. Why would she call him Joseph?
Interesting point and how is his name Remy as well anyway? Personally I always thought Germain was the raven the entire time, and in the end the old man just writes that letter to assume his identity anyway. I thought the blood in the beginning of the movie was actually ink and the reason why he is involved indirectly or directly with every letter.
I watched the film last night. I thought Denise called the doctor 'Joseph' because of the biblical character of that name, known as Chaste Joseph, or something like it, because he refused the sexual advances of Potiphar's wife -he had been sold as a slave by one of his brothers to Potiphar - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_(Hebrew_Bible). In the film Denise had just tried, not very subtly, to seduce Dr Rémy Germain -and when rejected, she made that comment. Just an opinion, hope it helps. By the way, excellent film, in my opinion.
