The thing about patriotism nowadays... first of all, it's not "cool", second of all, (I don't want to insult anyone's political beliefs, but these are mine) the things going on in America, our war, etc., they're kind of depressing. It used to be that America was on the vanguard of civil rights and everything, now not so much. Things have kind of stagnated. No one back then protested WWII- it was accepted and supported, kind of a b&w issue. I mean, there was this Cangey short YOU JOHN JONES that I saw, and in it, GOD HIMSELF says that America is the side to be on. Can you imagine how that would be received today? And while protest is a beautiful thing, it just seems so... modern. Which is why I love the unity and innocent patriotism of YDD. Viva Cagney!

The main reason no one protested ww2 was due to the fact we were attacked, if they had done a poll on dec 6, 1941 over 80 percent of the country would have voted no to going to war. Even the Korean war was not protested, the reason Vietnam was protested was because of television, people at home saw the carnage and dead american soldiers without knowing why we were at war. I can't say that the usa was ever on the vanguard of civilrights when the Jim Crow laws were still around in the 60's. It took the courage and sacrifice of thousands to over come racism. The USA has a lot of problems to work out but there is a reason people all over the world try to come live here.

I am English and live in England. I was born towards the end of WW II.

Yankee Doodle Dandy is one of my favourite films.

I'm not worried about the inaccuracies of the story nor the overt patriotism. The film was made for a people that was at war, to uplift their spirits and to entertain them.

It does so magnificently: the superb photography (how dare anyone suggest it be artifically coloured); the non-stop action that was still sprinkled with pathos at times; the unforgettable music and songs; and transcending all this, the work of James Cagney.

He was sensational; I never tire of watching his performance.

To comment on richardpaperboys's allusion to war protests, the Korean War was technically a UN operation, hence no declaration of war was made by the US.

In reality we know it was the super powers fighting by proxy. What has changed in the fifty-odd ensuing years?
