Gilberts?

When Cohan and Mary are turned down by Dietz and Goff after their performance
of "Harrigan, That's Me," Mary is upset and Cohan tells her something like,
"Don't let those two gilberts get you down. What did he mean by "gilberts?"
A reference to Gilbert and Sullivan?

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

The term Cagney was using was Gilpin, a favorite of his that he also used in the film The Roaring Twenties. It refers to someone who is a sucker or usually someone of a little wealth who thinks he is smarter and better than he really is.
