Macaroni

"Stuck a feather in his hat, and called it macaroni". Was Yankee Doodle taking acid or mushrooms or something? It sounds like he was on a serious mind altering trip, hallucinating or something. Do you suppose he ate his hat because he thinks it's macaroni? What's wrong with him?

The original Yankee Doodle song, I believe, was created by the British to make fun of the Americans during the American Revolution--it's just nonsense stuff.

From the Online Ecyclopedia:

"Macaroni: British dandy in the 18th century who affected Continental mannerisms; "Yankee Doodle stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni"

In this context, the word macaroni has nothing to do with the italian pasta.

The song "Yankee Doodle" was written around the time of the Revolutionary war.
Cohan incorporated some phrases and melodies of this song into his song "Yankee Doodle Dandy".

Sory this is so late, but "macaroni" in this context meant "macaroni style". It was a foppish and elaborate style of men's dress, that was nicknamed "macaroni" because young men who adopted it either had, or wanted it to be thought they had, been on the Grand Tour of Europe, thus establishing their first ranking in society circles.
