Mummys Tomb:Killing Mary Gordon Oh My God

hello again this is TomK the film tv historian here a week later now to discuss among my happy horror films of vintageyears The Mummy's Tomb. i see some commrnts are very unfavorable well to each hos own but im love these old chestnuts these forbidden hidden gems many that have stories all their own. I enjoyed the Universal Mummy seroes but now i want to discuss and bring to life a unforgettable scene that packs a wallop long since 1962. Its my job to know certain aspecs of making of grade a to grade z films. as a lover of old horror films lets discuss the unthiniable. Even tho many may hate this film , who can forget the tragic killing of Mary Gordon (the gifted actress aka Mrs Hudson in Sherlock Holmes films) dies a death we cannot ignore. imagine what audiences saw in 42, a scene so chilling that VHS copies of the film deleted the scene in the 90s but later restored it on dvd. could that scene had been that powerful/ It was as it is disturbing. the killing of an elderly woman much less elderly people in 42 in a horror film was not common. Look at the makeup of the scene. it sets up as a toutine bit with old Jim the hired hand collapsing by the sight of Kharis at the Banning home. the music sets us up for the main kill. Outside on the porch comes Jane Banning calling out Jim . we see in the background the approaching mummy. he puts his hand to her throat from rewar view and the camera pans in closeup for an absolutely stirring shot closeup of a mercifuless innocent Jane Banning ..her eyes in shock her scream inhuman. Wow they did this in 1942/ Yes they did hey folks if you think this scene and come on now regardless of wat one feels of the film, this scene is well handled and realistic, look at other ventured daring to e brash like Dr renaults Secret and The Monster & The Girl. all made within the same time span. those two films have some very disturbing uncommon death scenes that will be etched in your mind..I know what i speak. The geat actress did herself proud. She was killed by Karloff in Bride of Frankenstei 7 yrs earlier but that scene was tamed compared to the makeup of the senarior scene of Jae Banning slowly being eliminated. I love films like this daring to be dare to be dfferent to flex your dramatic muscles. Thats it. Check the scene and tell me it wasnt a great disturbing scene. it was . some things speak for itself. Thanks Universal and thanks Mary Gordon. you did a grand job. unsettling but good. Til my next entry stay well and god bless. TOMK

I totally agree with my buddy Tom here. I was a fan of this film from the start, and I think it is the best of the 40's Mummy films. The 1932 original will always be my favourite but these later films gave us a Mummy that stalked in his bandages which I thought was great and a nice change.

The scene is strong stuff for the day and i'm surprised they got away with it, but there have been loop holes before...a good example is The Black Cat 1934, one of my favourite films EVER! I myself love both vintage and modern horror but despite what most of the younger fans think, there are many dark and disturbing vintage films out there that they are missing.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks also to my buddy Tom for his awesome review!

thats awesome your so perceptive like i looking at these daring little episodes a growing studio got away with. there is a reason and ill tell you like i once did on my website to 1000 performers i knew. In the 30s 40s we had the Hayes code you couldnt do certain things in movies sex graphics violence death, profanity homosexuality. here is were the run starts. all the major studos had the Brass top monitoring every thing they comit to film. but heres the secret no one talks about. these rigid rules applied to big studios small time poverty row outfits got away with daring momrnts knowing the bIG BRASS would not check them out but rather go after MGM Paramount,20Th Fox,Columbia. yes Universal is a big but it was not big in 1942 my friend. It was middle of the road . Imagine these scriptwriters knowing theyre going to try to put to film a given scene that ight be questionable. The tragic murder and the way its executed (no pun here) is prime example. very rarely did american audiences see in those days the murder of an elderly murder much less from a mONSTER. I still get chills watching Mary Gordon get strangled. you dnt exected a to see a thing like this. Its like watching your dear grandma or mum getting murdered. I got tons of hidden secrets on other films. its fun unravelin mysteries. Hey I got that Rondo Hatton secret i should talk about. Thanks. Yopure the very first person yet to reply to one o my vintage horror remarks. Check out Giant From Unknown, Night Monster,Black Raven and Dr Renaults Secret and a little thing called Monster& The Girl, the title isnt original but oh my god the death scenes are downright scarey. thanks my friend welcome aboard.you make my work easy. TOM

You must discuss more of the vintage horror films.

I have almost every horror film on VHS and DVD... from the 1920's to the 1960s.
I'm only lacking The Night of Terror (1933) with Bela Lugosi...and Life Returns (1935).

I couldn't believe my eyes when Mary Gordon got killed. She turns up in so many movies of this era but I'm sure this is the only time we see her die.
