Face bandgages

I couldn't help but notice that when the ancient Egyptians mummified Karis they wrapped his head and face with bandages but when the coffin (I can't spell sarcofigus) is opened, there are no bandages on his head and/or face. What happened to them? If they just rotted off. why didnt the rest of the bandages rot away also, true, some of them did have a bit of decay but did not rot away.

Yes, I did notice the trailing bandages but I attributed that to the fact that when he was mummified he was completly covered with bandages from head to toe, they covered his arms and held them to his chest, and the same with his legs, they were held together with bandages. Maybe the outer bandages were of a different kind of cloth that decomosed rather quickly and I think I just answered my own question, thanks anyway.
