The opening scene was actually pretty intense.

Sounds kind of funny to say about an old b&w film from the 40s, but that opening scene with Peter Lorre threatening to cut off the guys fingers in one of those old style guillotine paper cutters, really had my attention.

They could have added a little blood to make it seem more intense.

That wasn't allowed back in the 1930/40's to show blood.

Well, Lorre didn't actually cut off any fingers. But you do glimpse some blood on Hardwicke's swastika armband, after Lorre knifes his foe then wipes the blade off with it and tosses it on his body. In WW2 films, you do see trickles of blood in combat scenes - most often when an enemy pilot gets shot.

I agree that the opening scene in Jon Hall's shop was really well done. Unfortunately the rest of the movie degenerates into standard invisible man fare despite a good cast.

The whole movie is more comical than intense. Peter Lorre's character seems to inhabit a different movie altogether.
