Stanley and Roy?

Why the masculine names?

reply

Don't know why Stanley, but Roy might be short for Fitzroy, which was the mother's maiden name.

reply

Probably the author was interested in the meanings of their names:

Roy from Fitzroy = son of a king, i.e. noble and great
Stanley = stone wood, lack of warmth and feeling?

reply

That's very interesting. I was trying to think who was popular back then but all I came up with was Roy Rogers and Stanley Livingstone.

reply

Maybe the book explains this?
