When does it take place?

I've always assume that this film was set in modern times or close to it. However, I've heard that somebody at Disney claimed that Gaston is the hunter who shot Bambi's mom. Obviously, Beauty and the Beast is set several hundred years ago. Even though it was likely meant as a joke, that still does raise a question. When does Bambi take place? Probably the only clue is the camp that the hunters left. Does it look modern?

That's the thing with Bambi; we don't know. And frankly, I love it that way. I think the story could take place in any time period, whether it be a few hundred years ago or today.

Honestly, the camp could be modern or from the 1700's.

All i remember was a canopy tent (Could be made of any fabric), a fire, and some cooking supplies.

The fact that the person shoots more then one time in a row could limit it to the late 1800's, unless there was 2 or more hunters standing together (very possible).

If INFACT they were whitetail deer and not Roe or Red deer, then it could not have been Gaston.

Could be the old man from the Fox and the Hound though...
