Weird...

Bogart looks like himself in Casablanca. The coat and the hat and the name is still Rick! It's too weird. Any reason?

Possibly but it is still weird that someone should use the almost same character in two distintive movies. He has the same name He has the same clothes...

Bogart hardly ever played anyone except Bogart. Most major film stars of the studio era almost always played themselves, or the character that the audience loved for them to play. (Think Eastwood, Wayne, Cagney, Flynn -- no great shakes as actors, but very big at the box office in their time.) Once Bogart established his character as Sam Spade in "The Maltese Falcon," he seldom played anyone else. (Major exception: Fred C. Dobbs in "The Treasure of Sierra Madre," terrific job.) He began to mellow a little as he got into his 50s, but he still played the same self-reliant tough guy who seldom took any fecal matter off of anyone. Little wonder that the success of "The Maltese Falcon," and the creation of Bogart's stardom in that film, would lead Warner Brothers to team the same director and stars in another film ASAP.

Also keep in mind that the character of Rick Blaine in "Casablanca" was a creation, not of Warners' screenwriters, but of playwrights Murray Burnett and Joan Alison, who wrote a play called "Everybody Comes to Rick's" in the summer of 1940. They sold the screen rights to the WB about 18 months later, and while Howard Koch and the Epstein brothers greatly enhanced the original script in their retitled screenplay, they kept the original character names created by Burnett and Alison (long before "Across the Pacific" was written for the screen).

and..The Caine Mutiny.... Beat The Devil.. Bogart's characters were more diverse than you gave him credit..

True in some cases but certainly not all - Spencer Tracy, Paul Muni, Frederick March, Henry Fonda, Olivier, James Mason, Charles Laughton, Edward G Robinson - Montgomery Clift, actually looking at this list I think they were a lot better actors then than now!

So much ignorance on display here. Wayne, Cagney, Flynn "no great shakes" as actors? Seriously? I suppose you think James Dean is the essence. Just keep regurgitating the received wisdom.

I'm I the only one on the internet who doesn't understand why people leave ridiculous quotes below their replys? It seems like a big waste of time. This is all over the internet forums...why? Oh well...Bogart is dressed the same way in "The Big Sleep", although his name obviously isn't Rick. But don't forget,"Across the Pacific" was made BEFORE "Casablanca." And also the outfit you're think was primarily worn by Bogart at the end of "Casablanca." Ciao

This reminds me of the quote by Robert Mitchum: "I kept the same suit for six years - and the same dialogue. They just kept changing the title of the picture and the leading lady".

Oh, for the love of God--not the "facts are stupid things" guy again. Seriously, dude, research that quote and try to wrap your head around the real story.
