A Memorial Day message from Anthony Minghella (RIP)

Memorial Day was started by ex-slaves in grateful tribute to Union soldiers and as a day of mourning for all those who perished in the Civil War. At first, cities were draped in black and parades were solemn affairs.

After WWI, it was extended to memorialize the American casualties of all wars.

In that grieving spirit, I offer this magnificent clip from Cold Mountain.

A stirring rebuke to mythologizing crap like They Died with Their Boots On.

On the topic of collective guilt, here's an Australian memorial day expressing collective remorse for the historical mistreatment of Aborigines.
