I've always found it odd that this movie, made in 1941, had no mention of WWII. Rather, it ignored the war altogether. If 'Beakey' was going to Paris for his securities, he may have met a trifle bit of resistence landing at Calais.

The story is set in 1938 according to the date on the telegram Lina receives from Johnnie on the day of the hunt ball
