watching it again it seems an odd film spoilers

I have seen this film before but watching the dvd it seems more odd than before.

We have got used to the idea that unless it is stated a film is set in the present day.
But this film is set in Britain,it was made in 1941,World War 11 started for the British on 3 sept 1939,but nobody mentions the war.

There friends seem to be a lesbian couple and Cary Grant is very friendly with the mid but nobody mentions these things in the film.

People ask if he was lying at the end,I think he was but his wife or the police could check by looking at his passport,I am sure at this period you would get your passport stamped everytime you landed in a foreign country?

It is a good film but the social setting (upper class people with daft names)is hard to take seriously today.

The movie is probably set around 1932, when the book was published.

The woman with the suit and tie at Isobel's is probably meant to be a lesbian. It was more strongly implied in an earlier version of the script, but lines where Johnnie referred to her as an old boy were cut due to the fact that 'sexual perversion' did not comply with the production code.

Movies are not really meant to cover every small detail. The police never really suspected Johnnie anyway, and in Lina's state of mind it probably wouldn't occur to her to check his passport. She made up her mind that he went to Paris when she called his hotel and never questioned it.

It is a good film but the social setting (upper class people with daft names)is hard to take seriously today.

I don't quite understand. The names of the characters have aged badly?

Songbird, you've got tales to tell

I mean that the setting seems unrealistic, the people are a parody of the sort of people they are meant to be,in other Hitchcock films even the small parts are more real, the milkman in THE 39 STEPS for example.

The telegram Lina receives from Johnnie informing her that he will see her at the Hunt Ball is dated March 8 1938.
