Can someone explain the opening scene - about the leg?

Just curious about the highly original opening shot with the black screen and then Cary Grant asking Joan Fontaine about her leg. Did he rub up against it? Were they both entering the cabin at the same time? Whatever, I find it a awkwardly done although a little racy for its time. (Like the close up of Fontaine's purse closing as Grant advances is perfection.)

Johnnie came into the cabin, a little tipsy, thinking that it was a private cabin. Lena was already sitting, reading her book when they went through the tunnel. In the dark, he accidentally bumped her leg while entering.

And, yes, it's meant to be pretty racy.
