The Life Insurance Policy and Lena's Mental conclusions

From what I understand, Johnny tries to borrow from or cash in part of Lena's life insurance policy. I don't understand how exactly she could make the mental leap to murder. If he really didn't love her and wanted only her money, he could have simply killed her and taken everything for himself. By trying to cash in part of the policy, he substantially lowers the payout in the event of Lena's death. Since Johnny seems incapable of saving money, it is likely that he doesn't have life insurance. Lena probably had a policy taken out by her parents and changed the beneficiary after her marriage.

Didn't one of the letters he received say that the cash could only be paid to him in the event of his wife's death? That's when she suspected him of trying to kill me.

Songbird, you've got tales to tell.

Which character did you play?

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

She draws this conclusion because she suspects he killed Beaky for his money and then finds a letter referring to him obtaining money in the event of her death. Her inference is not that much of a 'leap'.
