Whats the ending in the book?

Acc'd to the TCM host, Robert Osborn, the book ended as Johnnie being a murderer. Lena is pregnant and drinks the milk with the poison (gladly) because she doesn't want to bring a baby into the world fathered by Johnnie.

Yes, Johnnie was the murderer in the book. But the movie was far better than the novel, because the novel had some flaws.

The movie creates a fine ending, because everything we are watching is in Lina's point of view.
