How was Johnnie famous?

Johnnie is obviously famous (Early in the film, there is a full-page photo of Johnnie modeling in a magazine. The photographer wanted his photo. The girls flocked to him like a celebrity. Etc) I'm curious:
- what is he famous for? (I must have missed something...)
- assuming he's famous, why is he so poor? (Do we just assume it's because of the gambling and bad habits?)

He's not really "famous." He's a local personality. He's well-known in the area for his charm and for being such a rogue.

Back then, newspapers had "society" pages for material like that. A lot of old movies will use articles from society pages to quickly establish a plot point, like some character is going on vacation, or the two main characters are engaged to be married.
