I'm watching this right now. They got married at night. They go on the train, he asks one of the workers "How long do we have?" The guy says "a few minutes". They did not have sex. I know because I'm watching this right now. Maybe there WAS a scene but in the film version I'm watching now, there was no way they had the time to conceive a child.

Like in this movie, it's usually done in very subtle ways but I suspect most of the adult audiences at the time understood exactly what was going on.
