This was Bogarts most pivotal career role for 3 reasons
(1) This film is considered to be the very first film noir and; (2) It was the beginning of Bogart's incomparable lead actor screen presence and singularly memorable fictional film characterizations; (3) It also marked the beginning of his teaming with the great John Huston. They, of course, would go on to make the magnificent work of art "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" in 1948. Bogart was, for his riveting Fred C. Dobbs role in TTSM ridiculously left out of the nominations, but he did win his only oscar in Huston's "The African Queen".
