One Bogart line I thought out of place

"......if we're going to make sense of this dizzy affair....." he says to Bridget. Until you read the book. While the line does not strike me as Bogart, it is exactly as written, so a fine testament to the film faithful to the book. Of course, one change from the printed story is Spade virtually strip searches Bridget for the missing $100 bill; something they just couldn't put onto film in the 1940s!

OK, I should have written "Brigid." :)

What makes you think it was out of place? I think a lot of the dialogue, in keeping with the period and noir genre, was appropriate.

I just don't envision Bogie referring to the events as a "dizzy affair." Maybe I'm thinking of him more as Duke Mantee or Roy Earle, and Spade might say that, but whatever. Just my humble, if dizzy, opinion.

Either way, this is one of the greatest films ever made....

Ok, I see your point. While Sam's character was a tough guy, I don't think he could be compared to the ruthless Duke or Earle characters that Bogey so aptly portrayed.

"When you're slapped, you'll take it and like it". I can understand take it, but like it??

I’ve always taken that line as suggestive of …other interests Joel Cairo might have had, shall we say. 

There is a serious error after Miles Archer is killed and Bogey arrives at the scene and is getting a rundown of what happened from the detective (I think it's Ward Bond). The error is Bogey identifying the Webley pistol as an automatic when it's clearly a revolver.
