This may be obvious in the film but why did the ship captain go to Spade's office? I know to give him the falcon, but why to spade. He knew him already, and he knew he wanted the falcon? I must have missed something. An honest question so please no snide replies.
The dialog moves so fast, it's hard to keep up with. But I gather Brigit entrusts the statue to Jackoby so she doesn't get caught with it. Afterall, Gutman was willing to kill for it, and they did indeed shoot Jackoby.
BRIGID: Where Floyd hid it. CAIRO: Floyd Thursby, and you know where he hid it? (She nods.) Then why do we have to wait a week? BRIGID: Oh, perhaps not a week.
In Istanbul, Brigid got her hands on the Falcon and connived Thursby into being her protector from Gutman, Cairo and Cooke. They entrusted it to Captain Jacoby and tried to flee by hopping another boat to SanFran.
Spade: When you heard Thursby was dead, you knew Gutman was in town, so you came back to me.
Brigid first hired Spade to take Thursby out of the picture so she could make off with the bird. She ended up with Archer instead. She killed him to set up Thursby for the murder leaving her with the bird. Then Gutman spoiled that plan and terrorized Bridgid by killing Thursby. Brigid then wired Jacoby and told him where to take the bird in an emergency, to her latest seduction...Sam Spade.
Its a bit far fetched that he could make his way to Spade's office in SF unless he knew his way around but thats the way the book was written.
