in two, maybe three scenes in the flic bogey uses an odd desk lighter to light up his cigarette...i have never seen this type of lighter used before...it looks like a metal stick that's struck against something...

It might be a Ronson Touch Tip Lighter from the 30

I was wondering this too, thanks for replying.

But why wouldn't the entire lighter fluid reservoir go up in flames when you put the wand back in? Obviously, it didn't, or else that would have been an enormous problem, and it wouldn't have worked in the movie. But why? It seems like putting a lit match to a reservoir of lighter fluid would be an extraordinarily bad idea.

I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

risky!

Life's like a Cabo Carne Asada: never know how spicy it's gunna get.

reply

Maybe the fluid is in the stick. And the reservoir is where the flint is.

reply

No, the fluid is caught in cotton at the bottom of the lighter. the wand contains a wick tha is pressed into the moist cotton, in the narrow tube extinguishes the flame: it's absolutely not like a bomb or so...

reply

This. And the reason the narrow tube extinguishes the flame--even though it's full of flammable liquid--is because nothing burns without oxygen.

Nothing.

reply

And there is probably a safety concern which is why they no longer make it.

reply

Thanks! I was wondering about this too, had never seen such a lighter before.
I don't mean to impose, but I am the Ocean.
