Deanna Durbin Singing 'Going Home'

Besides loving Durbin's natural style of acting and comedy styling, I thought Charles Laughton was wonderful in the film. His slightly pixalated, impish take set the right tone. Maurice Chavalier did the same in the remake but I don't think quite equal to Laughton's performance. Also, Laughton was only about 40-41 years old, about 9 years older than Bob Cummings (who was playing his son), but Laughton is totally believable as someone perhaps 25 or 30 years older, rounded shoulders, shuffling walk and all.

Durbin's short section singing "Going Home", with Laughton's superb attention, can always make me cry. Both, indeed, have now gone home.

Durbin didn't "go home" until April of this year.
