Kincade has been away from the ranch for 5 years. Assuming he left to fight in the War in 1861-65, the year should be about 1866-1870. Buckley mentions Custer defeating the Apaches in Arizona. Wyoming is a territory, which would put the movie after July 25, 1868 in real life.

Buckley tells an Indian, Lightfoot, that Sitting Bull will get 150 rifles and that the people trying to steal Sitting Bull’s land are at the Kincade ranch. Custer and the 7th Cavalry drive away the Sioux attacking the Kincade ranch. At the end Custer says he has been ordered to the Little Bighorn to fight Sitting Bull. So possibly this is just before Custer’s Last Stand in 1876. Or maybe this is a previous conflict at the same or a different LiIttle Bighorn, which Custer survives.
