Specifically, the scene going into Canada. I wonder if it was filmed at the Detroit border crossing...you can go into either the tunnel or over the bridge.

Well definitely not in New York. I had to chuckle at the shots of those street signs at the beginning of the movie. They all refer to intersections that don't exist. No doubt New Yorkers in 1940 also got a laugh out of it.

I think the border crossing scenes and Niagara Falls were done by a second unit. When principle actors were needed in those settings they were against a process screen.

in the shot of the border stop is clearly seen the "hotel norton palmer" which stood in windsor, ontario, canada near the ambassador bridge. a sister hotel stood across the river in detroit called the "hotel norton."
so apparently, they are crossing from detroit into windsor. obviously not correct, but in "bird on a wire" with mel gibson, he and goldie hawn cross from detroit directly to green bay, wisconson -- i've tried it, it can't be done. :)
There may have been some second unit work (and rear screen projection), but the only location listed for the film is Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA.
