I think the only reason why people give this a good rating but people dont know about it dont question the film is its not available. If it was shown on dvd it would easily make the top 250. Older people remember this film having seen it years back. But because hitler had it banned and the film is not on vhs or dvd to a great degree its not well known to younger people. I got the dvd and thought it was superb and a real tearjerker.
shareYou are totally correct. It could easily out pace many of the films listed there. It is an amazing story about Germany before we were involved or knew about many of the atrocities going on there. You have to keep that in perspective while watching. The story is indicative of the Nazi's rule and domination of anyone disagreeing with their politics. One of the great quotes in the movie comes from Frank Morgan when he has a visitation by his wife and they were discussing their son and his daily trials. His quote is," He must not learn to hate." A simple thought but one with immense power. It shows on TCM sometimes so keep a out for it or search on their website. P.S. A great poem at the end of the movie too!
