Cecil Kellaway

Can anybody explain why that wonderful actor Cecil Kellaway is given full onscreen credit in the cast list - yet never utters a word and is only glimpsed during the party scene? Was his role cut?

It is a great pity that the excellent Warner DVD failed to include a mini-feature drawing on the studio files to explain this and the slightly different ending that they recently found.

Any ideas, fellow buffs?

It's a shame. He's a great actor.

Kinda cool that he had a much more substantial role in his next teaming with Bette Davis, 24 years later - "Hush . . . Hush, Sweet Charlotte."

I'm glad you posted this. I noticed his name on the end credits, and I thought, "Have I gone mad? I didn't see Cecil Kellaway."

I've read somewhere that he was originally in several scenes, all of which (except for that brief glimpse of him at the party scene)were cut during the final edit of the film. Like most material left on the cutting-room floor, these scenes are probably lost forever.

Don't forget that he was in the courtroom scene as well. I suspect he had interactions with The Joyce's and their niece, Adele. They seem to be near each other in the background scenes.

Does everyone know that the niece "Adele" (Elizabeth Earl) is Sijourney Weaver's mom? Yes, it's true. She dropped out of her budding movie career to be a full time mom. And proceeded to have a superstar daughter.

I was disappointed, too, as I was looking for Kellaway all the way through! Spotted him during the party scene, but thought, Nah! That can't be him - they'd at least have given him a few lines!

The IMDB trivia section says his scenes were all cut.

Always enjoy his performances. My favourite is in Intermezzo, when he tells the little girl the story about visiting a Chinaman's house.

I was just watching this movie this afternoon and kept looking for Cecil Kellaway and never saw him. I too was wondering why he was given the screen credit.
