Here's some cast trivia

Herbert Marshall actually reprises a role here, playing Robert (Leslie's husband), having played Geoff Hammond in the 1929 original.

The young house guest (role of Adele Ainsworth) of the Joyce's is played by Elizabeth Inglis... mother of Sigourney Weaver.

Thanks for the Trivia!!

I am so tickled to find out that the niece from England was Sigourney Weaver's mother! "THE LETTER" is in my top 5 and I often go to sleep by it playing in my VCR (have had the tape for 15 years at least)...I know the dialogue by heart and to now know that the girl who says "Good heavens we don't need to be entertained!" is Sigourney's mom...that makes me smile inside!

I've seen Bette Davis crochetting in a couple of movies. Is she really doing it herself!?

reply

I just finished watching it. It sure looks like she was an experienced crocheter to me.

She was tatting lace, not crochetting. Tatting is a greater skill, more refined and certainly more detailed and intricate that crochetting...and therefore more telling of her character.

My grandmother tatted. Tatting uses a tatting shuttle with thread wound around in it. Bette Davis was using a fine crochet hook with fine thread from what I could tell. That's what it looked like to me, anyway.

I don't know how it's done, but there is a method of tatting that uses a needle. However, it looked like she was holding a crochet hook, and I don't know if you can tat with a hook.

I've "googled" in vain for the pattern or instructions for what she's crocheting. I guess until the pattern's found, viewers can't be sure exactly what it is she's doing.

My grandma used a tatting shuttle, and that's the only time I've seen it done. If you google a picture of "tatting shuttle" you'll see that it can't possibly be confused with a crochet hook. Tatting actually makes knots, but crochet doesn't. Crochet will all pull out by the loose thread, but tatting won't from what I can tell.

You are right about knowing the pattern! That would certainly solve this!

Yes, Marshall plays Hammond in the 1929 original. What's different is that in the original, Hammond has a whole scene with Leslie before she shoots him, so Marshall's role as the lover is much larger than the one we see in the 1940 version.
