I consider Irene to be a real undiscovered gem of it's era, and Anna Neagle a real find as well. She was really beautiful and could do comedy and dance passably. Her solo dance on the rooftop was exquisite and unforgettable.Yet the film is almost totally unknown, and she is known only in England. Why?
I discovered this film about 5 years ago. Again, thanks to TCM! I found it incredibly charming, with delightful performances. The color sequence was a wonderful surprise, and sure gave us a good look at how beautiful Anna Neagle was. Lately, I have found that many of the 'little' films are really wonderful, and if it were not for TCM I could not have enjoyed discovering these little known films, like Irene.
Absolutely agree with the posts here. I had never heard of this film, decided to watch it, and found it delightful. At first I thought it might be an adaptation of Roberta or Lovely to Look At and that piqued my interest. TCM is the best!
A real charmer. Great cast of characters. Music and comedy is immensely fun. Great to see performances of Dorothy Dandridge and her sisters. And much more!
I agree. It was charming movie. I enjoyed it a lot. Her voice was lovely and dancing was stunning. This movie made me more intrigued about Anna Neagle.
