I think the Great Depression warranted unprecedented actions was my point.

Tom hamstrung himself & his extended family by repeatedly committing violent felonies. By the end he was totally without worth to himself, his family, and the community. He'd learned nothing. Running off vowing vengeance on a comprehensive plain was a cop out, the easy road. Sure beat the alternative in his estimation, but, you can't punish wealth and expect to be heralded.
