About Stravinsky

Ok, in both the Trivia and Audio Commentary, he approved of his 'Rite of Spring' to play in any form. But, why was he very negative about Stakokvi's (sp?) performance??

Dunno. I guess maybe after he saw the finished product he just got turned off by it or something. Or perhaps it had something to do with a paycheck he received.

The Rite of Spring is one of the most challenging pieces of music that a conductor can aproach and many never get to grips with its many nuances. In my opinion Stokowski emasculates the score. Other much admired recordings like Claudio Abbado's hit too hard, while others again like Pierre Boulez accentuate the impressionistic elements of the score to the detriment of the dramatic passages. There's ultimately no right or wrong way to come at this music, just the artists interpretation and the listener will just pick the recording or performance that most appeals to them. I personally own about a dozen recordings of "The Rite" but the ones I like best are by Igor Markevich, Sir Eugene Goossens and Stravinsky's himself.

My undestanding is that he hated how the music was edited, but liked the images that Disney had come up with for it. In the end, noboady wants their music touched.
