Synesthesia

Hello all!

I just wanted to make an observation about this film- the opening sequence Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is very similar to the neurological condition synesthesia? I have the form of synesthesia where I can see colors and configurations when I listen to music, something that is pretty much identical to some parts of the opening scene. Anyone else with synesthesia notice this? Or does anyone know if the artist behind it had the condition?

Thanks!

Yes! I thought the exact same thing. It's very similar to what it's like for me. My brain mixes up sounds with shapes and movement mostly, but there are some colours too.

I do wonder if anyone behind that sequence had a funny brain, like we do. :D

When I first heard of the condition or ability, it was very puzzling to me, because I don't have it and can't imagine what it feels like.

But a friend of mine has it, and he used to have long, heated arguments with his siblings about whether a certain passage of music, a number or a letter was either green or blue!

I think both Disney and Stokowski could have had synesthesia and argued about colour visualizations of music. But I wish I could find that quote!

Here is that quote, it's also on one of the Blu-ray commentary tracks:

"Abstract art is what you feel when you see something." Walt once said about Fantasia. "We'd come to a big burst of a big crescendo and I'd see orange. It's funny. Stokowski, who was sitting with us, said, 'Oh no, I see that as purple.' just the opposite, see? A lot of people have tried to really analyze the whole darn thing. We just got in and had a heck of a good time throwing it together."
