Pretty good

Just saw this, and I found it to be pretty good. The first thing that deserves praise is the special effects, which still look believable to this day. Also, the actor who plays the crazy doctor does an excellent job. It was also interesting to see an older horror movie like this where the lead female character is intelligent, resourceful and self-willed. Usually it's the more traditional "damsel in distress" in these kind of movies. That said, I could have done without the lame love angle at the end. I'm not sure what was the point of that. That quibble aside, I enjoyed this movie, 7/10.

Agreed. This film is very solid and enjoyable. Albert Dekker was excellent in the lead.

When at first she shrieked at the sight of the alligator in the distance, I sarcastically remarked to myself "Thanks for screaming instead of warning them." I had to eat those words moments later when she not only came up with the strategy to defeat the alligator, but voluntarily placed herself on the line in order to make it work.

Much like Mighty Joe Young (also directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack), I went into the film with relatively low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by it. Dekker did a good job as Dr. Cyclops, the special effects still hold up pretty well today, the film made good use of its plot, and the sequences involving action and suspense were well-handled too.

Alexander Korda's THE THIEF OF BAGDAD won the Oscar for special effects beating out DR. CYCLOPS. However, when I look at the two, though Korda's film had wonderful effects, DR. CYCLOPS' visuals, I thought were are much more flawless. (though to be fair, THE THIEF was more epic and therefore needed more effects scenes).
