“Dr.Cyclops” Tonight Svengali 09:00pm Arizona Time ME-TV!

Tonight we’ve got a near-sighted stinker who’s labelled a shrinker- as an evil scientist uses his discovery to diminish the size of all who stand in his way – it’s “Dr. Cyclops”!

This full Technicolor 1940 science fiction epic brings a team of biologists, a minerologist, and a guy who owns their rented horses (?!) to the remote jungle compound of Dr. Thorkel, who needs their expertise to help him identify a microscopic specimen, since his own eyesight has deteriorated so badly.Thorkel tries to send them away abruptly, but the team, angry to be brought so far only to be dismissed so quickly, stick around and discover the area is loaded with a valuable radio-active element, worth a fortune!Thorkel is livid that his “guests” have snooped around, and,not wanting them to take the information anywhere, reveals his amazing discovery- the ability to shrink living things!Little do they realize- Thorkel has a “little” surprise for them!

Soon, the innocent visitors have a lot of big problems- as they battle both natural elements and the nasty scientist-while shrunken to mini-me status!

This memorable movie established many special effects that became commonplace in “shrinking man” movies- and Albert Dekker as Thorkel is a real creep. We’ll tell you about him and his fellow cast members, the effects in the film, and-naturally- no “small” amount of Sven shtick!

“Dr. Cyclops” will appear on Me-TV tonight at 10 pm easten, 9 pm central,10 pm pacific- and check your local listings for the time in your area. In Chiacgo, you get an encore of Vincent Price in “Invisible Man Returns” at 11 am on WCIU, the U!

Last call for voting in the national Rondo horror awards. You’ll find Sven nominated as favorite horror host of 2012 in category 22- along with our friend Dave Fuentes in category 13 for best article- about last year’s Horror Host Hall of Fame- as well as in category 19 for the “Terror from Beyond the Daves” as best blog- and , please write in our pal John Aranza, owner of the “Horrorbles” memorabilia store,as “Monster Kid of the Year” in category 34. To vote, go to www.rondoaward.com – you can cut and paste the ballot and e-mail it to [email protected] BEFORE voting ends at midnight Sunday night. Follow instructions , or your vote won’t count- that means , vote just once, and include your name, etc.Vote for as few or as many categories as you wish- but VOTE for whoever or whatever your favorites are!

One more quick note- another great comic artist has passed away- Carmine Infantino, whose 1960s work on “The Flash” and “Batman” books, as well as other DC Comics,is legendary.I’ll always remember his “How I Draw the Flash” tutorials.

Excellent print on MeTV. Sven was fun, the commercials not too annoying, and the movie rocked at a technical level,--the sets, the color--Dr. Cyclops still rocks, still holds up. It can stand up to any Universal mad doctor horror of the same (Production Code) period. FWIW: this is not the first jungle horror Paramount produced, as they'd been there before in Island Of Lost Souls and Murders In the Zoo. All things considered, Albert Dekker's Dr. Thorkel, while mad, was probably the least sadistic of the three villains of these tropical horrors (Zoo doesn't stay long in the tropics).
