Now That's A EXECUTION...

Could not believe what I saw. The 'Lynch Mob' breaks down the door, aims their Rifles and JOHN SMITH Jr. (Vincent Price) is blasted out the second story window in a hail of LEAD! Then on the ground they continue to pump bullets into him.

That's Joseph Smith. He did fall out of the 2nd story window as he was shot and they continued to shoot him after he was dead

nan1701; When I saw the movie could not believe it. Then followed up with some research and yes, it was as brutal as shown. Though JOSEPH SMITH JR. did have a Pepper Box for defense, three barrels misfiring and three wounding his assailants. That was no match though for his assassins fire-power.

Well, remember what Mark Twain had to say with regards to the Pepperbox pistols. The safest place to be when one was fired, was directly in front of it :D

Wow that's one cruel murder, I never saw the movie, but have liked both main stars since I was a kid in the 80's and 90's. I am surprised that much violence was depicted in a 40's film.

If you want to watch it there is a very good copy on YouTube.

Thanks, during the pandemic, I became a fan of Tyrone's films

reply

That was impressive as hell and even moreso to learn it really happened that way (minus Smith attempting to fire back). Talk about overkill!

reply

I believe part of 'the mob' consisted of husbands whose wives Joey S. had commandeered. FAAFO.

The movie portrayed the actions of those against the Mormons as being simple straight religious persecution with no other motivation. Apparently this was done not just to make the Mormons sympathetic but to make a statement on the persecution of European Jews going on at the time. The crimes and misdemeanors of Joseph Smith were never touched upon. They make for darned interesting reading.

They were welcomed to Nauvoo (IL) until they started disrupting life in all the neighboring towns, playing the tyrant, and (yet again) run out of town. They have a very interesting history from just about every angle.
