Ringo's 'nice guy' character is unrealistic

we learn during the movie that Ringo was first in prison when he was 16, 'going on 17'. i was always under the impression prison system in those days made hard men even harder and was not designed to rehabilitate prisoners. i can understand why Ringo takes a liking to Dallas but his overly nice-guy demeanor throughout the movie towards everyone else is unrealistic.

The producers kind of had to make him a good guy because of the film industry's Production Code, which stipulated that evil succumbs to good no matter what.
