#2 film of all time

according to cine pad http://cinepad.com/awards/awards_1-50.htm and its not even in the top 250 on imdb

reply

Yeah, well, if this film were to appear on the IMDB top 250, they'd have to bump some immortal classic like Shawshank Redemption, Reservoir Dogs or Pirates of the Caribbean.

We don't have to suffer, we're the best batch yet.

reply

oh no not Pirates how can this even compare to the DISNEY movie Pirates. I mean how often do you see sword fights... or how many times have you seen a long drawn out ending with bad diolouge... or joohnny Depp being extremely drunk and hitting people.

Now it is 3 in theyshootpictures. "Vertigo" has gone past it. And even though I love Hitchcock, my favourite director, "Vertigo" is not the second best film ever made! Top ten? Yes, probably. But I have to say, that second and third, is very high.

http://cinepad.com/awards/awards_1-50.htm does resemblance theyshootpictures quite a bit. But it has some strange titles. I have always been fascinated by the mafia, so naturally, I liked Goodfellas. But there are other films, much more worthy the list.

The biggest blunder is putting "The Godfather" on 26th place. It is almost laughable. I remind you that I always have fascinated of the mafia, but "The Godfather" is much more than just a gangster film. It is much more a film about life. It simply has to be in the top 5, at least.

And talking about the biggest blunder: I think it is very wrong of both sites I have mentioned, to look so much past "Wild Strawberries". Neither lists have the film in the top 50s, and I think it is very wrong. Of all the films I have seen, it surely is up there with "Citizen Kane" and "Rules of the game". These are the only three films, which are perfect. (Ill add: as far as I know.)

PS: Theyshootpictures has dropped "SHERLOCK JR." and "Duck Soup" from the top 100. Really disturbing I must say. Those are the two best comedies I know of. Though "SHERLOCK JR." is short, it is as close to perfect as it can. As close as a comedy can be. And apart from the comedy, almost 90 years after it was made, it is still hard to know how he did the stunts in the film!

And is really "Battleship Potemkin" that good? Looks very dated!

I personally have found the TSPDT list to be much better for my own personal tastes than the IMDB 250. I've seen every movie on the TSPDT top 25 except for City Light, Passion of Joan of Arc, Tokyo Story, Rashoman, and L' Atalante. On there, Les Enfantes, Godfather II, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Third Man, 8 1/2, 2001, Vertigo and Singin' in the Rain all easily rank amongst my top 30 if not top 20. I've seen every movie on the IMDB top 25, and the only ones that would be in my top 30 or 20, besides Casablanca, Godfather II, and Citizen Kane which are overlaps, are Schindler's List and The Usual Suspects. Maybe City of God and Pulp Fiction.

I've yet to understand why The Searchers is so highly ranked on TSPDT. Maybe I just need to watch more Westerns or John Ford movies (my first and only thus far),but although I found it good and entertaining, it didn't seem top 10 worthy.

Sorry, but the Godfather, while a great film, would never make the top ten in international acclaim, although it would certainly be over Amedeus. The Battleship Potemkin practically made movies. It has cinematography unparalleled even today. #4 is certainly a reasonable spot in international acclaim, but it should be at least #2.

black and white movies were better

Yes, I was joking. I'll try to be more sarcastic next time.

We don't have to suffer, we're the best batch yet.

I don't know but CITY LIGHTS is a rather simple romantic comedy. You won't make me like that movie or thinking it's any deep. That list is dumb.

reply

It doesn't have quite enough votes, particularly from the special group who control the Top 250, the infamous "Top 1000 voters". My own vote history is quite large, and come to think of it, I'm beginning to wonder what it takes to become part of this elite group (if it even exists) and how many films you need to have seen/voted for.

Cinema is an old whore who knows how to give many kinds of pleasure.

reply

2200 votes aren't enough.

Here's an extreme case of rating:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419677
A teenie slasher film without much distribution. But 6000 votes and 8.1 average.

Go to this site. It's pretty good actually.

The Rules of the Game is also #2 in the list

NOTE: Just saw that "ON THE WATERFRONT" has been removed of the TSPDT list, what has the world come to? :/

I am open to people saying it is overrated. I loved it, but I am open to that view. But surely it must be in the top 100?

This list is the best one I have seen and it puts the film at #3.

I myself wouldn't put it at Top 10 and I've seen a hell of a lotta films on that list.

Still a great film and much better than teh sixth sense.

Well hell, let's face it 200 of the IMDB Top 250 should not be there.
