English sub-titles

I watched a copy of this movie from a Renoir box-set last night.

There were white English subtitles, which were sometimes impossible to see over white images. From the little French I know, I could also tell that many lines and parts of lines had been omitted in the sub-titles.

I understood the movie fine, but I felt that the sub-titles very vastly incomplete.

Is there anyone experienced with different versions of the movie, who can recommend a better-translated edition? Or else, is there someone bilingual who can confirm or deny that I missed much?

Did you watch the Criterion? They do the best they can with the subtitles. But it's impossible to translate Renoir without loosing LOTS of fine details.

Sorry for a reply so long after your submission but I am just coming to this board.

I too have a problem with white subtitles. For that reason I prefer to watch a DVD rather than live television so I can stop as long as I need to study the subtitles.

I have seen yellow used and it was a vast improvement. I feel it should be an industry wide standard. I wonder to whom I could address this idea?
