smiles of a summer night?
has anyone else noticed the similarities? obviously they are different in many ways, but could this movie have been an influence on bergman?

shareI read in a interview that when bergman made this film, he hasn't seen La Règle du jeu yet.
However, Bergman was influenced by Shakespeare's Midsummer night's dream.
- Who is God ?
- When you close your eyes and make a wish, God is the one who doesn't care about.
I can see "Smiles," but as you said Bergman hadn't yet seen it (though I'm not sure when else he could have). But have you considered its similarity to "Gosford Park"? Move to an English cottage and hoo-ha, you're there.
Be like a duck...remain calm on the surface and paddle like hell underneath. - Michael Caine
I brought the same point up when we were discussing 'Smiles of a Summer Night' in a Bergman class, and my professor said it was a valid point, but then just went on to our next discussion.
