smiles of a summer night?

has anyone else noticed the similarities? obviously they are different in many ways, but could this movie have been an influence on bergman?

reply

I read in a interview that when bergman made this film, he hasn't seen La Règle du jeu yet.

However, Bergman was influenced by Shakespeare's Midsummer night's dream.

I can see "Smiles," but as you said Bergman hadn't yet seen it (though I'm not sure when else he could have). But have you considered its similarity to "Gosford Park"? Move to an English cottage and hoo-ha, you're there.

I brought the same point up when we were discussing 'Smiles of a Summer Night' in a Bergman class, and my professor said it was a valid point, but then just went on to our next discussion.

Don't you hate it when you have something really good to say and professors are just like

"Yeah. True. True. Anyway..."

reply

I had the same thought, I think Le Regle du Jeu is much better though.
