I consider my VHS copy of this movie to be a treasure of my movie collection. It is at a friend's right now,and I can't wait for her to watch it and return it so I can view it again. I also can't wait to hear her remarks about it! It is still available used at Amazon, but now is a pricey $71! I don't know why IMDb has lately started slacking in showing that Amazon has a movie, but don't trust them,go check for yourself, because I have been finding many that this site does not even show them having at all! This is one wonderful movie.I can't say enough good about it.
Yes, it is a treasure!! I was beginning to believe that I may be among the few that had seen this lovely film or seen it and liked it, so I'm so glad you posted!! I just love this movie, as it radiates all the love and caring this family had for each other. Lovely movie!!
I saw the movie in the late 70's not knowing what I was about to watch. It had an unexpected ameliorating impact especially when I was only watching TV with the intent to pass time. I was a son in the family of seven, saw it by myself, and never talked about the movie with anyone. Even though the details are very vague now I would watch it again with others, candid, giving encomiums before it started.
This is definitely on my top 25 favorite movies. I, too, first watched this movie without having any idea what it was about, but it immediately captured my fancy. I have to admit, too, that I always enjoyed films which present the possibilities of what happens to us after this life. I have my personal favorites, like Heaven Can Wait and We Never Danced, but I'm wondering if anyone else has any other favored selections.
I watched it for the first time today and like many of you didn't really know what I was getting myself in for. What a Treasure. I found myself Laughing and getting a HUGE Lump in my throat a few times in the movie. I hope that somehow somewhere someone will find the Idea to put this on DVD. It should be Preserved for all time.
What really got me was the Ending I was really expecting a different ending. I guess back in the 30's the Directors had more balls and didn't care if the Audience left the theater crying. Now the Half wit Directors would of made a Touchy Feely Ending if they remade.
Q: How does Soylent Green taste? A: It varies from person to person. "Futurama"
Pretty good film, but so are many from the same time.
Kinda black though for my tastes. Pretty cold blooded for Death to temp the kid up in the tree. Funny how he wasn't treated as a bad guy despite this reprehensible act.
But Pud was meant to be taken from the beginning, which was why he, along with Gramps, could hear and see him. Mr. Brink explained that he hadn't wanted to "hurt" Pud, "only" to take him, which had been part of his assignment from the start.
Good Point was thinking this too. Thats why the kid could see Mr. Brinks as well. Only people who were going to Die could see him. still what a great film.

Everyone dies eventually. I guess seeing/hearing Brink means your time is at hand. Was anyone else startled when Barrymore rose from his wheelchair and began to "walk" at the end? I knew it had to be some kind of special effect, because by this time, his walking days were through.
