essay
Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck(an American author) in 1937. In this novel he illustrates the men of the depression as he saw them first hand. These men are ultimately hopeless. They waste what little money they make on short-term pleasure, never caring for the future. Dreams they may have but dreams is all they are. Literally, their dreams are never fulfilled but figuratively it could be argued that some do earn their dreams, but not without sacrifice. Through death some men of the depression live their dreams. And as Christians we know that the dream is perfect and harmonious existence in worriless heaven.
From one place to another the men travel. They have adopted an elder form of life. Nomadic and independent, the men migrate from farm to farm. Due to this constant movement the men have no distinct home. Everything is temporary and they carry all of their belonging strung over their shoulder in a bag. “Crooks could leave his things about, and being a stable buck and a cripple, he was more permanent than the other men, and he had accumulated more possessions than he could carry on his back.”(p.73)
