shareFirst, the story didn;t take place in the pre-Civil war period. There was a radio and movies, remember? That alone should tell you something. Second, Crooks lived alone because he wasn't allowed to live with the white guys. He was injured on the job, like Candy. Hie being separated was Steinbecks way of noting the hypocrisy of humans in a broad sense... the men lived like second-class citizens compared to the boss & his family, yet still saw fit to treat Crooks like a second-class citizen to themselves. Get it? Read the book.
