did the Committees not realize Paine was withThe Taylor Machine?

i love this movie, like,it is in my top ten.

This always bugged the heck out of me. The committees at the beginning knew The Governor was in the "Taylor machine". They knew Horace Miller was a Taylor stooge. The Governors KIDS KNEW Taylor was "RUNNING THE SHOW!!!!!"

Did the committees not realize That Paine was too? Heck, Taylor was putting Full page ads for the "Silver Knight" in all of his newspapers! Taylor was sitting at the same table as Paine at the banquet celebrating the appointment of Smith!

were the committees aware of Paine being in The "Machine", and were the average citizens of the state just ignorant? Which if that state had the lowest unemployment and the highest federal Grants, i would be too.

i know paine had a great reputation in the Senate.

plus, did they think Smith was not going to find out about the Dam by having Paine's daughter take Smith out the Day the Dam part of the deficency bill was read in the Senate? he would have found out eventually.

Anybody got an explanation? I guess Paine's involvement in the "Taylor machine"
wasnt as flagrant to the people of his state since he was up in Washington for 20 years.

i guess that is my attempt at the Marvel Comics no-prize.

Also, in pre-Internet, pre-television, pre-24-hour news cycle days, things may not have been as evident as they would be now. (of course, comparable political machines don't exist like that, either). I don't know how politically savvy average voters would've been in a Montana-like state circa 1938, 1939. How many citizens would've even known what Paine looked like?

They only needed Smith to be in the dark about the dam until the deficiency bill passed. After then it would be law and too late for him to do anything about it.
