Mr. Smith is from 1939..

Everyone must remember that this movie was made in 1939, and thus should be judged by its standards not 21st century ones! The movie had big name actors and this movie even launched some careers and or created legends out of the actors. The movie is meant to show that even if you stand alone, you should still stand for what you believe in. Filibusters in history have never been this heroic so to me that is fiction (although the length is based off of huey long's 10 hours 35 minute filibuster in 1935 in regards to the national Recovery act) The movie is Fiction and meant to be inspirational to remind americans to fight for the right cause and not to be back down on or forget the leaders/people before us...A little corny at times, but come on, who doesn't need a little corny in their lives instead of cut and dry. I think the director was setting a vision for what should be in congress. Good and honest man like Jefferson Smith. He may have been a little naive, but that is what I love about this character, He represented the innocence that still existed in America. We being from a very cynical world of the 21st century scoff at characters such as this, but in all reality, and a fair amount of the population of the 30's and 40's were just like mr. smith and we need to have a little respect for that. This movie will never live up to the 21st century, and we should not make it. Its a classic and what more can be said about that.

A good movie stands the test of time, regardless of times it was created in. best proof - work of Charlie Chaplin.

I only bring up the time period because of the bashing the movie was being given. The movie does stand the test of time, i totally agree with you on that. however, people are using 21st logic in order to pick this movie apart and that i think is unfair. Judging it by its generation standards is how i think the movie should be picked apart and broken down. Its a classic and a very good one. You mentioned Charlie Chaplin who i love but i would never use 21st century mindset to understand Charlie Chaplin I meet him on his terms and generation in order to fully understand the meaning behind Charlie. I may sound odd at my thinking but its a working theory on movies and their generation. I hope that clears things up a bit

It is true that one must have at least the basic knowledge of the period and see it in the context of its time. It is unfair to for example pick a 40s movie and complain that their knowledge in certain thing is bad if that knowledge was the norm in that period and it was only improved in the later times.
