anyone find it depressing

that the only time a senator ever stood up for an issue like jimmy stewart did in the movie was strom thurmond filibustering the civil rights act?

What about Huey Long? He held several filibusters to oppose legislation he felt was unfair to working class people. He read recipes, the Constitution (which he called "forgotten lore") and then started asking the senators what they'd like him to talk about. He only lost the floor because he had to go to the men's room.

There was a Senator or Congressman who made a stirring speech -- I believe about how the U.S. should not get into World War I -- and crashed to the floor, but that wasn't a filibuster. I can't remember the guy's name. I think he had a mild stroke but was all right. As they took him out someone yelled "They're taking out the Bill of Rights, and don't you forget it!"

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!
