In the 1980s or early 1990s Pierce Brosnan would have been perfect as Mr. Smith. He even sorta looks like him and has that boyish charm and aura.

Margot Kidder in her prime (aka as she looked in Superman 1) would have been perfect as Clarice Saunders.

In early 2010s I would say someone like Henry Cavill would have been great. Not sure about Saunders but maybe Amy Adams is close enough. She is very lovely for the part but is a bit more sweet than the Saunders' strength.

I would definitely love a well made remake with love and being true to the cause of the movie and also maybe continuing it a bit to show what happened afterwards which was always left unsatisfying to me.

I would think these would have happened -
* Sen Paine resigns after spilling the beans and a committee is formed to investigate
* nothing happens from the committee except to say Sen Paine has resigned and everything is now behind them
* Willett Creek Dam is pulled from the Deficiency Bill and rest of it passes as the Willett Creek part is investigated
* Senate committee finds nothing on this (despite all evidence) and gives in to regular business
* nothing else happens from there as Sen Smith eventually just resigns.
* Gov Happy appoints 2 new James Taylor Senators
* James Taylor lies low for next few months till the election and then his 2 stooges get elected by James Taylor $$$
* James Taylor is definitely set back due to this and the Willett Creek Dam graft part dies and they devise a new plan for getting rich from govt contracts but it will now take time
* A year or two later, one of the 2 new Senators is now the new stooge of Taylor but a lot of time and money has been lost and some of Taylor's friends pull out. Willett Creek was a flop now and Taylor has lost a lot of his clout.
* Ex-Sen Smith is back with his scouts/boys and is a hero in his state but he ultimately disappears into his own personal life
* Politics and corruption, rotten dealings, bad lobbying are all back in Senate
