A remake would suck, but yes, Nicolas Cage has always reminded me of James Stewart. I mention this to other people, and they wonder "what the hell I'm smoking", not seeing the similarities. We already have an entire thread devoted to "Casting the remake". Check it out.

all this time, i thought i was the only one who thougth Nicolas Cage and James Stewart very similar. I guess it is no coincidence then that they are two of my favorite actors.

reply

Lol, psouth and others, I've thought of Cage as a latter-day version of Stewart for years! I thought I was the only one, too.

Yeah, I love both of them and see a lot of similarities:)

I just saw this movie for the first time-and the first person i thought of to play smith if they remade it was nicolas cage.

It's funny. Nic Cage is the modern version of Jimmy Stewart, but for some reason, I don't think he'd do well in this part (despite his role as a patriotic idealist in National Treasure). In fact, I see all these threads about recasting Mr. Smith, and none of the actors mentioned would fit the part. It would have to go to some obscure actor that would make a breakthrough performance.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is one of those movies that I would love to see a remake of. The film should be updated in some way.

I know this is going to be insane, but I think Jason Schwartzman should play Jeff. Saunders should be played by Amy Adams. Paine should be played by Al Pacino.

Wow, I made this thread almost 2 yrs ago!! I didnt even have to same user name. But I dont like how people always say re-makes and sequel ruin the original. How?
Is Psycho tarnished from the sequels AND re-make? No. Its still considered one of the greatest films. If anything it would bring more viewers to the original. I know the Departed made tons of people want to see Infernal Affairs, which has gained more popularity. But if they make it... Make it good.

Nic Cage? He's a joke. It be like the Simpsons Parody. But Distrubia did pretty well for a remake of a classic Hitchcock Film.

Disturbia isn't worthy to wash the feet of Rear Window (metaphorically speaking).

Yeah, I'm up for a sequel or remake if it's well made. I woun't go into it saying, "Oh, it's a remake, this is gonna suck." I judge it like an actual movie! Think about it, John Carpenter's The Thing is a remake. And if Zack Snyder hadn't remade Dawn of the Dead, we wouldn't have Watchmen or 300. So I'm in full support of a good remake. Which, for this movie, would require not Nicholas Cage. Josh Hartnett would be higher on my choice list.

I think Nicolas Cage should play Jefferson Smith, Victor Garber should play Paine, and Stuart Damon should play Taylor.

reply

Renee Zellweger is Sonders and John C. Reilly should be her reporter friend, the one that wanted to marry her.

reply

Mathew Perry would be a good choice for Jeff, and Martin Sheen could be Taylor and Aaron Sorkin could write it.
